Topics and Topic Groups

Let people stay on your list and choose what they hear about.

What are topics?

Topics are the subjects people can opt in to within a list: a genre, a venue, a series. Someone can stay on your newsletter list and drop the topics they don't care about, rather than unsubscribing from everything.

Topics sit inside topic groups. A group is a heading for related topics, like Genres (Musicals, Comedy, Family) and Venues (Main Stage, Studio).

Where topics live

Topics belong to a list. Each list has its own topics and topic groups, so your email list and SMS list can offer different choices. You manage them in the list's configuration options, under topic groups and topics.

Creating topics

  1. Open the list.
  2. Open the list's configuration options and go to topic groups and topics.
  3. Add a topic group, and name it.
  4. Inside the group, add a topic.

You can rename and delete topics and groups.

How people get topics

  • They choose them in the preference centre. Every topic on the list is shown there. See Your Preference Centre.
  • You add them when you add someone to a list by hand.
  • An import adds them. Upload a file and add everyone to a list with a given topic. See Importing List Members.
  • A ticketing system contact preference maps to one. For example, a contact preference called newsletter can be connected to a topic called Subscribers.
  • Lead Capture sign-ups can add people with topics.

Using topics

On a list, filter members by topic to see who has chosen what. If you pick more than one topic, for now you'll see people who have all of them.

You can send a campaign to a single topic.

Tips

  • Name topics the way patrons talk. They see exactly what you type.
  • Keep the list short. Five clear choices get used; thirty get ignored.
  • Group topics by how people decide, such as what they like and where they go.
